Centre Block Rehabilitation Project – Interiors
Client: Public Services and Procurement Canada
Location: Parliament Hill, Ottawa, ON
Year of project completion: 2031
Team : CENTRUS
The Centre Block rehabilitation project in Ottawa, one of the largest heritage conservation projects in the world, is underway. This historic monument, which houses the House of Commons and the Senate, was rebuilt after a fire in 1916 and completed in 1927, with the Library of Parliament remaining from the original construction.
The building is renowned for its exceptional neo-Gothic interior decoration. Since 2017, DFS has been working with the CENTRUS team (WSP, HOK, A49, ERA) to restore the building, with plans to complete it by 2031. The project involves 285 professionals and curators specialising in 17 disciplines. The work includes modernising the mechanical systems, restoring the interiors and renovating the exterior envelope. The project is aiming for carbon neutrality and LEED Gold certification.

Centre Block’s architecture, its spatial qualities, play of light, and its excellence in decorative fine art and finishes coalesce as a total work of art, which are at the heart of Centre Block design team’s conservation and design decision-making process.

Dal-de-verre stained glass windows and their jewel-toned light cascades into the House of Commons Chamber and are just one of the many intriguing heritage features that DFS and the Centre Block Designers are challenged to conserve while also upgrading.

We are working with conservators across seventeen material fields to restore the heritage building and its exquisite decorative finishes and artworks so that it will endure for future generations.
