Dominion Building, Bedford Row, Halifax

This 1933 Art Deco style Dominion Building occupies a full city block and has massive sandstone and clay brick walls. The seven-storey main building is crowned by an additional seven-storey tower, the focus of this project. Since the closely spaced steel columns are fully masonry encased, removal of the masonry was obligatory. This was proved correct, as the poor steel condition required many localised repairs, which would have been difficult without complete masonry removal. Unknown support brackets were discovered, needing urgent attention, which may not have been discovered without complete masonry removal.
